John Balshaw's Jigge, by Jenni HydeDescriptionThe first published transcription of a little-known manuscript, originating in Restoration Lancashire and now held by the British Library, with analysis and discussion. This book presents one of the latest-known examples of a stage 'jig', a form of musical entertainment which was particularly popular during the Elizabethan period. As the author explains, the text reflects contemporary concerns including the Civil War context and the religious and political divisions within Lancashire. John Balshaw's Jigge is a rare example of the form from the north of England, and possibly the only example which can be attributed to the north west. Dr Jenni Hyde is an Associate Lecturer in the Department of History at Lancaster University, and the author of Singing the News: Ballads in Mid-Tudor England (Routledge, 2018) Lake District Field-Names: a guide for the local historianDescriptionThis booklet is a handbook for all those interested in exploring the history, development and meaning of field-names in the Lake District. It also includes a detailed Glossary of obsolete and dialect terms encountered in field-names and a series of local maps to illustrate patterns in field-naming in different parts of the Lake District. Printed Maps of Lancashire: the first two hundred years, by Ian SaundersDescriptionThis beautifully-illustrated book is packed with information about the physical creation of maps from the mid-sixteenth to late eighteenth centuries.
