John Balshaw's Jigge, by Jenni Hyde

John Balshaw's Jigge, by Jenni Hyde

Description

The first published transcription of a little-known manuscript, originating in Restoration Lancashire and now held by the British Library, with analysis and discussion.

This book presents one of the latest-known examples of a stage 'jig', a form of musical entertainment which was particularly popular during the Elizabethan period. As the author explains, the text reflects contemporary concerns including the Civil War context and the religious and political divisions within Lancashire. John Balshaw's Jigge is a rare example of the form from the north of England, and possibly the only example which can be attributed to the north west. Dr Jenni Hyde is an Associate Lecturer in the Department of History at Lancaster University, and the author of Singing the News: Ballads in Mid-Tudor England (Routledge, 2018)
